Beetles to Bones is a family business that started as a hobby and has turned into a skull cleaning business that cleans large amounts of skulls each year. We use special beetles called dermestid beetles to clean our skulls. The pros to using dermestid beetles over boiling is the whole skull stays intact, no shrinking of the skull or losing all the nasal cavity cartilage.
The process of prepping the skull for the beetles involves skinning it, removing the jaw and excess meat, then removing eyes and emptying brain cavity.
The skull is then frozen to make sure their are no foreign bugs in the skull that could infect our bug colony.
The skull is then put in with the bugs until it is completely cleaned of all meat and cartilage.
It is then put in a degreaser bath that removes all the grease from the bone, that will turn your skull overtime, after all the grease is removed the skull is put in a whitening solution that will make the skull bright white. The skull will then have all the teeth glued in to make sure you wont have any teeth falling out.
The skull is then ready to be picked up or mounted on a plaque, if you would like.
